King’s College recently launched and required a building for a new engineering department with civil and mechanical concentrations to complement its core curriculum. On the edge of the campus stood a substantial 4-story concrete and steel frame structure that had been unoccupied for 20 years – the 1912 former Spring Brook Water Company headquarters on Franklin Street.

The building needed new vertical circulation, and moreover, an owner willing to take on the significant repairs to the spectacular neo-classical masonry facades.

The resulting massing (facing towards the Susquehanna Riverfront Park and visible from busy River Street) gives the aspect of two paired towers. The buildings typical floors now house various laboratory spaces and classrooms for the civil and mechanical engineering curriculum, as well as faculty offices, conference rooms, and student break-out areas.

The post King’s College Mulligan Engineering Center first appeared on Studio KLP Architects.

A historic church was purchased 10 years ago by a religiously-affiliated college in Northeastern Pennsylvania, and remained unoccupied until it was repurposed as the new Chapel, Campus Ministries Center, and Multi-Purpose Facility. The architect chose a simple cloister-like masonry out-building in an effort to downplay the addition. The addition is linked to the church by a glazed corridor; this link is set back from the addition’s front façade by 20’ to allow for maximum visibility of the church’s side elevation and to visually separate the old from the new.

Speaking to both the history and the future of ministerial activities at the college, the new Campus Ministries Center and Multi-Purpose Facility makes an effort to model sustainability in general via an adaptive re-use within Wilkes-Barre’s significant downtown historical architectural building resources.

The post King’s College Chapel & Maffei Assembly Commons first appeared on Studio KLP Architects.
