King’s College Chapel & Maffei Assembly Commons

A historic church was purchased 10 years ago by a religiously-affiliated college in Northeastern Pennsylvania, and remained unoccupied until it was repurposed as the new Chapel, Campus Ministries Center, and Multi-Purpose Facility. The architect chose a simple cloister-like masonry out-building in an effort to downplay the addition. The addition is linked to the church by a glazed corridor; this link is set back from the addition’s front façade by 20’ to allow for maximum visibility of the church’s side elevation and to visually separate the old from the new.

Speaking to both the history and the future of ministerial activities at the college, the new Campus Ministries Center and Multi-Purpose Facility makes an effort to model sustainability in general via an adaptive re-use within Wilkes-Barre’s significant downtown historical architectural building resources.
