Six technical academic departments in an existing building at Alvernia University were programmed by KLP and are currently under construction at the University’s downtown Reading Post Engineering Center. The Post Center is a 6-story multi-use facility and KLP’s work area represented over 2 full floors of renovation. Departments included Nursing (both undergraduate and graduate), Physician Associate, Occupational Therapy, Bio-Medical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Environmental Engineering. The Nursing Department’s simulation center includes laboratory spaces for health assessment, fundamental skills, OSCEE rooms for structured clinical examinations, anatomage tables for virtual anatomical simulations, and pre-brief and de-brief rooms.

KLP conducted comprehensive programming of the interior architecture, architectural design, and code compliance for the additional occupancies of 600 persons, as well as the interior design, F,F,& E, IT and security vendor coordination.

The building sits high above the adjacent road and directly in line with the local interstate highway, and becomes the new gateway to the campus. The linear interior zoning of the learning spaces allows the ends of the circulation core to become two-story glass atriums with a dramatic appearance in both day and night. The remainder of the exterior is clad in two contrasting colors of simple, corrugated metal panels. Interiors are minimalist and raw, with a monochromatic color palette and fully exposed framing, flooring and mechanical systems.

The post Alvernia University Advanced Healthcare Simulation Center first appeared on Studio KLP Architects.

The Geisinger Health System is recognized nationally as a leading provider of progressive quality healthcare services. In its numerous hospital and ambulatory care clinic locations throughout Central, Eastern and Northeastern Pennsylvania, Geisinger has committed to LEED Certification for all new construction. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) criteria, as defined and administered by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) are implemented in an integrated design method to develop numerous strategies to reduce energy usage and carbon emissions associated with construction activity and building occupancy. This project is KLP’s second LEED building for the Geisinger Health System.

The 23,600 SF ambulatory care medical clinic structure was designed with a high-efficiency water source heat-pump system with cooling tower and a variable-air-volume distribution and a monitored control system providing energy savings, with a make-up air unit equipped with an energy recovery wheel. The building’s entry facade is orientated to the south, where skylights, an integrated photovoltaic laminate adhered to the metal roofing over the building’s larger public areas, are contemplated. Day lighting to the interior’s main corridor spine is providing by way of a continuous clerestory.

The post Geisinger Dallas Clinic first appeared on Studio KLP Architects.

This 18,000 SF ambulatory care medical clinic is located on Main Street in Pittston. This new health care clinic respects the street and the scale of the urban fabric. A partial brick street façade provides a durable and permanent treatment that reinforces the scale and material of the context, while large glass elements at the lobby and main entry offer transparency into the interior’s public functions – similar to the transparency of historic retail storefronts that line the street.

The reawakening of Pittston, PA is a recent success story in Northeastern Pennsylvania. One of four incorporated cities in Luzerne County, it has been brought to a new vitality by a group of dedicated community activists who in the last 15 years have been visionary in their efforts to transform the community socially, environmentally, and urbanistically. Whether by adopting progressive ordinances addressing human rights and non-discrimination, the support of a flourishing restaurant and retail culture, or the promotion of the city as logistically friendly to new development, the City of Pittston has set an example for new regional aspirations and goals for NEPA. This clinic makes every effort to support the sensibility of the new within the old and the view of historic and traditional towns in NEPA as valued regional resources – a notion that has not always resonated.

The facility sits atop its own all-weather parking garage which is at a lower level accessed via a rear alley-street. There is also an existing surface parking lot at the side of the building that is necessary to provide off-street ambulance drop-off. Nevertheless, the building does re-establish 100 lineal feet of street façade, and in holding the street edge, it strengthens precedent. In offering a large lantern to the street at night, and a durable, well-clad and quietly modern presence during the day, this clinic brings the family doctor back to town.

“Many jurors have been to downtown Pittston (Chris is a graduate of Pittston Area High School) & found it impressive that an architecture of this caliber could be realized there. The architects were successful in creating a building that is inviting with a welcoming entrance comprised of richly layered architectural elements.” – AIA Northeastern Pennsylvania Jury
