The existing building was comprised of classrooms, studio, and laboratories. It also includes a 2006, two-story, 22,790 sf classroom and lecture hall addition. This renovation project is a complete renovation of the interiors in the original building, including replacement of the mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, and electrical systems. The 2006 addition is maintained, with minor audio/visual upgrades and modification to mechanical systems. Renovations provide for new faculty offices, classrooms, conference rooms, and various program specific spaces for the nursing school, radio and television studios, and education departments.

The post Commonwealth University Bloomsburg – McCormick Hall first appeared on Studio KLP Architects.

Favorably bid at nine percent under budget, Scranton High School is a testament to how coordinated effort can result in a cost-effective design without compromising quality. Programmed for 1,800 students, this structure of steel, masonry, and glass is organized along a concourse that leads students to and from the major academic and extracurricular components of the school. This linear arrangement is in response to site conditions and lends itself to a unique order of spaces.

The new school sits on a hill that overlooks the District’s existing Memorial Stadium. The continuous curve of the building gestures toward the stadium and embraces the site. This helps create a large campus atmosphere in a very urban part of the city. The enclosing of space serves as a buffer for the site from the adjacent expressway. Its location at the intersection of three major thoroughfares positions the new high school as a very prominent building at one of the city’s main points of entry.

The post New Scranton High School first appeared on Studio KLP Architects.

The design of this new Nursing School for Alvernia University encompassed the renovation of an abandoned 30,000 SF grocery store, transforming it into space dedicated to the university’s medical and biology curriculum as well as their adult education and graduate degree programs. These programs required the design of specialized spaces including a wet lab with specimen storage and prep, a computer lab, classrooms, offices, conference rooms, and a student lounge. In addition to these educational spaces, the design also included the O’Pake Institute Business Incubator, a program offering a range of entrepreneurial opportunities. Further development of this campus building is planned, with a café and youth gymnasium to be incorporated into the overall building design.

The post Alvernia University Pottsville Nursing School first appeared on Studio KLP Architects.

Six technical academic departments in an existing building at Alvernia University were programmed by KLP and are currently under construction at the University’s downtown Reading Post Engineering Center. The Post Center is a 6-story multi-use facility and KLP’s work area represented over 2 full floors of renovation. Departments included Nursing (both undergraduate and graduate), Physician Associate, Occupational Therapy, Bio-Medical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Environmental Engineering. The Nursing Department’s simulation center includes laboratory spaces for health assessment, fundamental skills, OSCEE rooms for structured clinical examinations, anatomage tables for virtual anatomical simulations, and pre-brief and de-brief rooms.

KLP conducted comprehensive programming of the interior architecture, architectural design, and code compliance for the additional occupancies of 600 persons, as well as the interior design, F,F,& E, IT and security vendor coordination.

The building sits high above the adjacent road and directly in line with the local interstate highway, and becomes the new gateway to the campus. The linear interior zoning of the learning spaces allows the ends of the circulation core to become two-story glass atriums with a dramatic appearance in both day and night. The remainder of the exterior is clad in two contrasting colors of simple, corrugated metal panels. Interiors are minimalist and raw, with a monochromatic color palette and fully exposed framing, flooring and mechanical systems.

The post Alvernia University Advanced Healthcare Simulation Center first appeared on Studio KLP Architects.

A new classroom and laboratory building at Johnson College expresses the college’s mission as a technological education institution. In the digital age the college’s original building had become functionally obsolete. The school’s desire for the building to be extremely durable, as well as resonate with the sense of “industry”, was an important consideration. The college requested that the building to be a “teaching tool” for its students.

King’s College recently launched and required a building for a new engineering department with civil and mechanical concentrations to complement its core curriculum. On the edge of the campus stood a substantial 4-story concrete and steel frame structure that had been unoccupied for 20 years – the 1912 former Spring Brook Water Company headquarters on Franklin Street.

The building needed new vertical circulation, and moreover, an owner willing to take on the significant repairs to the spectacular neo-classical masonry facades.

The resulting massing (facing towards the Susquehanna Riverfront Park and visible from busy River Street) gives the aspect of two paired towers. The buildings typical floors now house various laboratory spaces and classrooms for the civil and mechanical engineering curriculum, as well as faculty offices, conference rooms, and student break-out areas.

The post King’s College Mulligan Engineering Center first appeared on Studio KLP Architects.
